TESOL Awards for International Participation

Purpose

To increase participation of presenters from outside of North America at the annual TESOL convention. This award is presented by the TOEFL Board of Educational Testing Service (ETS).

Eligibility

TESOL members who:
  • Are from a country other than the United States or Canada.
  • Submitted an accepted proposal for the TESOL 2023 Convention.
  • Are presenting for the first time at the annual TESOL convention.
TESOL members currently residing in the United States or Canada are not eligible. Preference is given to applicants residing in countries underrepresented at the TESOL conventions.

Amount

Up to four awards in the amount of U.S.$2,500 to cover travel and lodging expenses to attend and present at the TESOL convention.  

Criteria

The proposal will be evaluated according to:
  • The significance of the topic as it relates to the field of second language acquisition and ELT.
  • The contribution of the proposal to the field of TESL/TEFL.
  • Originality and creativity in concept.
  • Relevance and broad impact.
Applicants will also submit a statement of 500 words or less addressing the following:
  • How attendance at the TESOL convention will further their professional development.
  • How attending the conference will benefit their ESL/EFL community.
  • Why is this travel grant needed, including evidence of financial need.

To Apply

Applicants will submit their convention presentation title and description which should not be longer than 1,000 words, and a statement of 500 words or less addressing reasons for needing this travel grant.

Important: All applications submitted for this award will be pre-screened to verify that the proposals on the applications are accepted to be presented at the TESOL 2023 Convention. Applications with rejected proposals will be disqualified.

2023 Recipients

 img_20230201_132640_199 Dilrabo Babakulova is a lecturer at Westminster International University in Tashkent. She enjoys sharing her teaching experience and discussing professional topics with her colleagues. For this reason, she became a TESOL teacher trainer. Her professional interests include teacher training, student engagement and well-being, and positivity in the classroom.
fotovc Valentina Canese, PhD, is faculty and director at the Instituto Superior de Lenguas, Universidad Nacional de Asunción. She is the editor-in-chief of the multilingual journal Ñemityra: Revista Multilingüe de Lengua, Sociedad y Educación and the second vice president of PARATESOL, Paraguay's TESOL International Association affiliate.
 28335bc12b0542f0831e11f7be31759b.jpeg Beatrix Price is a lecturer at Eötvös Loránd University, ELTE, Budapest, Hungary. As a teacher trainer, she gives talks, workshops, and courses internationally. A former president of IATEFL-Hungary, her current doctoral dissertation explores English language teachers’ associations and their members’ continuing professional development.
