Maintaining Teacher Professionalism in ESL/EFL Contexts Around the World

In its recent update entitled “Position Statement on the Status of, and Professional Equity for, the Field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages", TESOL puts forth its position that “all educational authorities, government agencies and academic institutions recognize the field of TESOL as a unique academic and professional discipline that is distinct from, but on par with, other academic subjects” and recommends a “special and unique designation of the field.”

Our panel of leaders will provide a world view of the status of the ESL profession as they discuss the issue of ESL/EFL teacher certification, the role of research in developing and maintaining professionalism, institutional support for ESL professionalism, the transferability of professional credentials across borders, and national accreditation of teacher education programs.
