Overview
How well are your ESOL students able to meet the academic writing demands of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS)? In this workshop, participants will analyze the CCSS expectations for student writing, design writing prompts, and create formative assessment tools. The presenter will demonstrate how to use a variety of multimodal resources to facilitate student practice in explaining, analyzing, and synthesizing information and develop formative assessments to track students’ progress.

Grades 3–8 ESOL and content teachers
What Will I Learn?
In this workshop, participants will
- analyze the expectations of the CCSS writing standards
- explore the writing demands for different text types and purposes
- identify and analyze writing prompt–paired (visual and textual) resources (e.g., nonfiction picture books)
- develop writing prompts, including choosing multimodal resources that address content topics
- create appropriate formative assessment tools (e.g., checklists, rating scales, or rubrics) to assess student writing progress toward meeting a standard
