Overview
With a focus on the needs of English learners (ELs) in mathematics, this interactive, manipulative-based workshop closely examines the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics and focuses on immediately applicable ways for teachers to help ELs best meet these standards. The ready-to-use activities, strategies, and approaches can be adapted for use with K-12 students.

What Will I Learn?
In this workshop, participants will
- examine the organization and content of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in Mathematics at relevant grade levels
- explore implications of the CCSS and mathematics instruction for ELs
- learn ways to tailor and scaffold mathematics instruction for ELs that is aligned with the CCSS
- develop deeper understandings of the ways CCSS assessments may affect our work with ELs
- practice using manipulatives and other appropriate strategies to provide concrete experiences for ELs
About the Workshop Leaders
With a student-centered emphasis,
Anita Bright, assistant professor at Portland State University, works with other committed educators to ensure mathematics content is accessible to all learners. A National Board Certified Teacher in mathematics, Dr. Bright has expertise in both mathematics and TESOL, and more than 20 years of experience in K–12 settings.
Drawing from more than 13 years of experience with ELs at all levels, mathematics specialist
Erin Sylves’ work focuses on creating standards-driven and research-based mathematics curricula (elementary and secondary) for ELs, which provide extensive curricular materials and assessments. She also provides long-term, individualized professional development to educators in more than 200 schools.
