GPS: A Roadmap to Comprehension (C-3)


If English learners are to be successful in school, they must know how to use a variety of text comprehension strategies. This workshop addresses skills that enable students to comprehend different kinds of texts.  It explores some effective ways to teach comprehension strategies through the content areas. It also considers characteristics of effective instruction for promoting text comprehension.

ESOL teachers of Grades 3–8

What Will I Learn?

In this workshop, participants will
  • describe the roles of oral language and vocabulary knowledge in text comprehension
  • define three kinds of words students need to know and resources to use to identify these words in texts
  • analyze narrative and expository texts to identify language structures and describe how they support comprehension
  • describe ways to help English learners build on their knowledge of how English works so they can read texts effectively and efficiently
  • select and plan to teach effective comprehension strategies
