Overview

As we move through the K–12 curriculum, content areas become increasingly specialized in terms of skills, concepts, and language. English learners must learn rigorous content simultaneously with complex academic language. This workshop focuses on integrating language with content instruction in math and science—so that all students can reach high levels of academic achievement and demonstrate it on high-stakes assessments.

Who Should Attend?

Teachers in middle or high schools who prepare students for content-area instruction, including English language, math, science, or resource teachers. School administrators would also benefit.

What Will I Learn?

Through hands-on activities and demonstrations, participants

• develop content and language goals consistent with the Common Core State Standards in math and science
• practice using task and text analysis tools to plan for instruction in terms of language forms and functions
• explore a range of practical activities and strategies to promote receptive and expressive language development
• study, create, and share model lessons exemplifying planning with the end in mind, that is, from assessment to instruction

About the Workshop Leader

Pat Rounds is an instructional coach and math teacher in Oregon’s Woodburn School District. Over the past 40+ years, she has served as a teacher, teacher trainer, and administrator. Her University of Michigan dissertation describes the language of calculus instruction. She has published and presented nationally and internationally on second language acquisition and methodology, teacher training, and specific-purpose English.
