SWEL Certificate Workshop Series

SWEL CoachLanguage teachers are often asked to lead workshops and support their colleagues’ instruction, they but they rarely have access to the training needed to accomplish this work efficiently, effectively, and with confidence. The School-Wide English Learning (SWEL) Certificate Workshop Series prepares language teachers to share their expertise with colleagues through collaborative discussions and observations. SWEL is a systematic framework that recognizes teacher professional learning is most effective when it is in-house.

ESL teachers are the primary audience for the SWEL Certificate Workshop Series, with special sessions that include their school administrators. ESL teachers receive a digital badge for each workshop they complete. Upon completion of all three SWEL Certificate Workshops, teachers earn a SWEL coach certificate and digital badge.

Graduate credit is now available! For an additional fee of $195 per workshop, teachers can earn one graduate credit. After registering, email swel@tesol.org if you would like to arrange for graduate credit.

The certificate series consists of three workshops, including:
  1. The SWEL Contextual Language Workshop
  2. The SWEL Professional Development Workshop
  3. The SWEL Coaching Workshop and Administrators’ Workshop
Teachers can register for the entire series or take them individually.

Workshop One: SWEL Contextual Language Workshop: An Anti-Racist Approach to Language in the Classroom

This workshop builds upon ESL teachers’ existing knowledge of language learning and teaching, focusing on how to harness that knowledge and share it with general education teaching colleagues. The contextual approach to language instruction provides a framework for developing content area language instruction and strengthening home language support in the general education classroom.

Workshop Two: SWEL Professional Development Workshop

The SWEL Professional Development (PD) Workshop will examine what makes PD effective for teachers and site-based decision making. Teacher participants will be trained to facilitate professional development for their peers and provided the materials to do so through their use of Teacher Leadership for School-Wide English Learning text and framework.

Workshop Three: SWEL Coaching Workshop and Administrators’ Workshop

Workshop Three brings together ESL teachers and their school administrators. ESL teachers will learn non-evaluative peer coaching principles, set SMART goals, and plan to implement the SWEL Coaching Cycle.

Benefits for ESL Teachers

  • Develop expertise in non-evaluative peer instructional coaching and delivery of professional development that is customized to local needs.
  • Gain confidence in your expertise related to second language acquisition.
  • Learn new ways to support general education colleagues in their efforts to meet the needs of language learners.
  • Choose from a variety of prepared and flexible professional development materials.
  • Create a plan of action that guides you through the school year.
  • Ensure support for language learners throughout the school day, not just when you are able to work directly with your students.
